Ben’s Birthday

“I played this tune for the first time in Miltown Malbay during the Willie Clancy Week in the backroom of the Central Hotel on an evening where a small group of us celebrated Ben Lennon’s birthday, the great Leitrim fiddle player.  Ben was eighty years old that year.”

Breithlá Ben

“Sheinneas an port seo don gcéad uair le linn Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy in Sráid na Cathrach, sa tseomra cúil in Ostán an Central.  Tráthnóna ar leithligh a bhí ann, nuair a bhí buíon beag againn bailithe le chéile, le ceiliúradh a dhéanamh ar lá breithe Ben Lennon, an fidléir mór le rá as Co. Liatroma.  Bhí an cheithre fichid bainte amach ag Ben an bhliain sin.”

Head for the Hills

“Having played in the Auld Triangle in Macroom for many years, I remember on one occasion a friend of mine, Eibhlín de Paor who is a flute player remarked on her departure that she was ‘heading for the hills’.  I always thought the phrase would make a good name for a tune.”

Ag Tabhairt faoin gCnoc

“Sheinneas ar feadh na mblianta i dTabhairne an “Auld Triangle” i Maigh Chromtha.  Ar ócáid amháin ar fhágaint di, dúirt cara liom a sheinneann an fheadóg mhór, Eibhlín de Paor, go raibh sí “ag tabhairt faoin gcnoc”.  Shíleas i gcónaí go mba mhaith an teideal ar phort é seo.”

Seán Mór’s Slide

“A tune called after my granduncle, Seán Mór O’Connell as he was called.  He was supposed to be a good fiddle player in a long line of musicians in the family.”

Sleamhnán Sheáin Mhóir

“D’ainmíos an port seo i ndiaidh sean-uncail liom, Seán Mór Ó Connaill, mar a thugtaí air.  Deirtí go mba’ fhidléir maith é, agus é i measc mórán cheoltóirí sa chlann.”

The Sullane Slide

“This river runs from west to east close to the northern border of the parish with Clondrohid parish.  In the Irish language An Sullán is the only masculine river in Ireland.”

Sleamhnán an tSuláin

“Sníonn an abha seo soir gairid do theorainn thuaisceartach an pharóiste le paróiste Chluain Droichead.  I nGaeilge, is é an Sullán, an t-aon abha firinscneach in Éirinn.”

Mouse in the House

“Sitting at home one night a mouse started running on the ceiling over my head.  With the rhythm of its feet and its movement back and forth this tune formed in my mind.”

An Luch sa Tigh

“Im’ shuí dom sa bhaile oíche amháin thosaigh luch ag rith ar an tsíleáil os mo chionnsa.   Leis an rithim ina chosa agus an ghluaiseacht soir siar a bhí aige, tháinig an port seo chugam im’ intinn.”
