Old Butter Road

“Cork Butter Market was established in the year 1770 and farmers from all over Cork and Kerry brought their butter to that market to sell. So the route from Kerry was and still is called the Old Butter Road. Sometime in the past year I travelled that road and thought it a good idea to name a tune after it.”

Sean-bhóthar an Ime

“Bunaíodh Margadh Ime Chorcaí sa mbliain 1770 agus tugadh feirmeoirí as gach ceantar i gCorcaigh agus i gCiarraí a gcuid ime go dtí an margadh lena dhíol. Ag an am tugadh Bóthar an Ime ar an tslí as Co. Chiarraí agus maireann an t-ainm i gcónaí. I gcaitheamh na bliana seo caite thaistealaíos ar an mbóthar seo agus shíleas go mba mhaith an t-ainm ar phort é.”

Scoraíochtar

“Scoraíochting  was the word used for visiting neighbours’ houses by night and was a great tradition before the arrival of the television  and thus a Scoraíochtar was one who visited.”

Scoraíochtar

“Ag Scoraíocht an téarma a úsáidtear go háitiúil le cur síos a dhéanamh ar chuairt a thabhairt ar thithe na gcomharsan agus ba mhó an traidisiún a bhí ann roimh ré na teilifíse.  Thugtaí “Scoraíochtar” ar an té a bhíodh ar cuairt.”

The Mountplummers are Coming

“My daughter Áine is married to Francis O’Connor and they live in Mountplummer, Co. Limerick.

When they come to visit, our very quiet house is transformed like a storm would hit it when the three children take over.  But we still really look forward to their coming!”

Teacht Mhuintir Chill Aidhligh

“Tá m’iníon Áine pósta le Francis O’Connor agus maireann siad i gCill Aidhleach i gCo. Luimní.

Nuair a thagann siad cuairt orainn, athraíonn an tigh suaimhneach againn féin, dála stoirm a bheith ann nuair a thagann an triúr leanbh chugainn.  Ach bímid ag súil go mór lena dteacht i gcónaí!”

The First Swallow

“The first swallow of the year does not guarantee that summer has arrived, but to see one is a welcome sight none the less.  I composed this tune in April 2013 having seen the winner!”

An Chéad Fháinleog

“Ní hionann an chéad fháinleog a fheiscint agus an samhradh a bheith tagtha, ach is fáilteach an radharc mar sin féin, ceann a  fheiscint.  Chumas an port seo Mí Aibreán 2013, ar fheiscint na céad fáinleoige dom.”

Curlews in the Bog

“On wet marshy land close to where I live I remember when I was young to hear the curlews calling during the late summer. I still hear them occasionally but sadly not to the same extent anymore.”

Na Caorlúin  sa Phortach

“Ar an talamh bog riascach gairid don áit ina mairim, is cuimhin liom im’ óige na caorlúin a chloisint ag glaoch go déanach sa tsamhradh.  Cloisim ó am go chéile anois iad, ach níl siad chomh coitianta is a bhíodh agus is trua sin.”
