Scoraíochtar

“Scoraíochting  was the word used for visiting neighbours’ houses by night and was a great tradition before the arrival of the television  and thus a Scoraíochtar was one who visited.”

Scoraíochtar

“Ag Scoraíocht an téarma a úsáidtear go háitiúil le cur síos a dhéanamh ar chuairt a thabhairt ar thithe na gcomharsan agus ba mhó an traidisiún a bhí ann roimh ré na teilifíse.  Thugtaí “Scoraíochtar” ar an té a bhíodh ar cuairt.”

The Reaper

“The advances made in farm work since my youth are of a staggering magnitude, when one thinks of the many tasks that were done which relied on skills that are no longer required.

One such example is the work of the reaper in his use of the scythe for cutting hay and corn.  Nowadays of course tractor driven mowers of all sorts and combine harvesters get through a lot more work in much quicker time.”

An Spealadóir

“Is mó dul chun cinn atá déanta maidir le cúrsaí feirme agus an obair a bhí i gceist le linn m’óige go háirithe, nuair a chuimhnítear ar na cúraimí ar fad a bhí orainn agus nach bhfuil aon úsáid ann do roinnt mhaith scileanna a bhíodh de dhíth an t-am úd.

Sampla amháin isea obair an Spealadóra agus úsáid na speile do bhaint an fhéir agus arbhair.  Sa lá atá inniu ann gan dabht, úsáidtear tarracóirí agus innealra  baint  de gach sórt chun i bhfad níos mó oibre a dhéanamh, laistigh d’achar ama i bhfad níos giorra.”

Road to Mons

“A junction where the Road from Cill Na Martra joins the main Cork -Killarney road (N22) is known locally as “The Mons”.  I am not sure how it got that name but I think it might have something to do with the “Battle Of Mons” which took place during the first world war.”

An Bóthar go dtí Mons

“Go háitiúil, tugtar ‘An Mons’ ar áit áirithe ar an mbóthar as Cill na Martra, san áit a shroicheann sé príomh-bhóthar Chorcaí agus Cill Airne (N22).  Nílim siúráilte conas mar a tugadh an t-ainm sin ar an áit, ach measaim go bhfuil baint aige leis an gcéad chogadh domhanda agus ‘Cath Mons’.”

The Rebel Jig

“Some years ago Peadar Ó Riada, Áine and myself were invited to play on a television programme called ‘Up for the Match’ on the eve of a Kerry- Cork all Ireland Football Final.  So for the occasion I composed this jig in support of Cork but unfortunately it was Kerry’s day.”

Port an Mhéirligh

“Roinnt blianta ó shin tugadh cuireadh do Pheadar Ó Riada, Áine agus mé féin seinnt ar chlár teilifíse dar teideal ‘Up for the Match’ ar an oíche roimh craobh caide uile Éireann, idir Chiarraí agus Chorcaigh.  Chumas an port seo in onóir na hócáide ach bhí an lá ag na Ciarraígh.”

Rookery’s Visit

“A great friend of mine Denis O’Riordan, who was known as the Rookery, used to call to my house on a regular basis.  We used to talk and play tunes until late so this tune is in his honour.”

Cuairt an Rookery

“Thugtaí “an Rookery” ar chara mór de mo chuid, Donncha Ó Ríordáin, agus ba mhinic é ar cuairt chugam.  Chaithimís an t-am ag caint agus ag seinnt ceoil go déanach san oíche agus tá an port seo in onóir do siúd.”
